They are sooooo cheap at this time of year and I'm a sucker for a bun, so I think what's the harm in sticking a packet in the trolley for the afternoon pick-me-up.
And then I remember: they are dull as dishwater, that's what.
They squish down into absolutely nothing and taste of, well, nothing too! So I urge you, no I beg you... please try making your own this year. More fruit, more spice, less sugar, definitely fewer additives and a longer ferment will mean homemade are infinitely superior in flavour and texture. Not to mention the overall sense of well-being as the smell of fresh hot cross buns fills your kitchen.
